Startups, Time is the Most Valuable Commodity

Be the “sliced bread” of business

What’s the one thing everyone wishes they had more of? It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or broke. Married or single. Employed or unemployed. Hustling or relaxing.

We all want more time. Every single one of us. Whether we want to use that time to learn new skills, read more books, spend more time with family, or something else. There’s no denying we want it.

Humans crave time. And there’s a fixed amount for each of us. In other words, time is the most valuable commodity. To everyone. Including your customers and prospects.

Think about it. Why is sliced bread still considered to be one of the greatest discoveries in mankind? Easy, it saves an immeasurable amount of time.

Save your customers’ time and earn their money in return

I live and breathe the art of business, and if there’s one thing I see emerging, it’s that convenience is king. – Gary Vee

That quote by THE Gary Vee comes from his Medium article, “What Startups Really Sell“. And I completely agree with the social media mogul.

The main point Gary emphasizes is that all startups trade time for money. Or at least they should because time is the one commodity we cannot get any more of.

Sure, we could live a healthier lifestyle. But even the healthiest person on earth can’t add time to the past. The only way we can add time to our lives is to buy a product or service that will save us time.

Think Uber. Or Amazon. Or sliced bread.

We will gladly trade the money needed for an Uber ride instead of walking. Why? It saves us time.

We’ll get Amazon Prime for the ability to “Buy Now With One Click”. Why? It saves us time.

You’re in the business of saving time

If you have your own startup you should prioritize the time you save your customers before anything else. Every other aspect of your marketing and sales funnels could perfect. But you won’t convert many leads into customers if you can’t save them time.

Conversely, if you do save time, you are one step closer to winning. Which is why we see so many companies adjusting their business strategies to reflect the time you will save.

Twitter limits you to 140 characters because they value their users’ time.

The Chipotle app saves you time by letting you order your food earlier then cut the line.

Zapier has created an entire business model predicated around saving their users time.

The businesses who realize this have a huge advantage over those who don’t.

It’s the difference between waiting on hold for 40 minutes or asking an in-app messenger system like the one Intercom has created.

It’s the difference between roaming a store for a certain product for 20 minutes or buying it with one click on Amazon.

It’s the difference between coordinating with a fickle graphic designer for months to get a design or using Design Pickle and getting your designs within a few days.

It’s the difference between asking your customers to answer 20 different survey questions in an external browser or having them click a link in their email to provide feedback.

It’s unsliced bread vs. sliced bread. And we all know who won that battle.

Convenience is king. Everything else is secondary.

How YesInsights saves you time

This is why YesInsights was originally created. There was a demand to be able to quickly gather feedback from your customers without taking their family time from them.

And it’s why we created a survey software system that can easily be copied and pasted into any email platform. Look how quickly your users can answer a YesInsights survey:

And YesInsights will save you time too! You can only ask one question at a time, so no more countless brainstorming sessions to come up with 20+ survey questions that you realize afterward gives you no actionable way forward.

No more spending days of analyzing data looking for an angle where you could remedy each of your customers’ various difficulties.

No more busy work.

And last week we launched with Zapier, and are now connected to 750+ third-party apps. So now, your users can automatically be segmented into different marketing campaigns just by clicking a link.

You won’t have to export a .csv file, analyze and segment the different responses, and load it into your email marketing platform for each segment. We’ll do that for you 🙂

Conclusion

I hope this article helped you understand the importance of emphasizing time in your unique selling propositions. It requires a shift in your frame of mind.

Too often, startup founders and marketers are guilty of emphasizing features over convenience. But adding additional features usually means you have to sacrifice on convenience.

Further, prospects are more likely to be convinced on your product if you can create a vision about how your product will give them more family time. Instead of saying your product does X, Y, and Z while your competition only does X.

Features are important. But spending more time with your family is priceless.

Be the sliced bread of the startup world.
